Systems Win2k will not boot in safe mode

Ok I put Win2k back on my computer and put all my programs back just the way I like it and downloaded a ton of music files and video files. My hard drive got pretty fragmented so I tried to go into safemode to defrag effectively (no programs running). When I try to get into safe mode, it shows all the system files loading in that black screen with the white text, but it takes a lot longer than usual. It will then show the "Windows is now starting" box with the blue line that scrolls from left to right then the computer just doesn't load Windows. The hard drive light doesn't come on, Windows does not load, the mouse can still be moved around and the little scrolling blue thing is still moving. I have left the computer for 5 minutes and it doesn't load Windows so time is not the issue here.

Anybody seen this before? I installed a whole ton of stuff so it would be hard to isolate 1 thing as being the problem.

The computer will boot perfectly in regular mode, no trouble at all. When i defrag in regular mode it does a really half assed job because so many things are running such as services, hidden programs and what not.

Even if defragging in regular mode was good, it would still be nice to know that safe mode works. It has happened to me before where I install something and it causes the computer to crash upon startup and I had to uninstall the program in safe mode. It would be nice to know that I can do that if something goes wrong.

My computer takes a really long time to boot Win2k in safe mode too. You would think it would take less time since it's loading less but it almost takes 3 times as long as a normal boot.

Just thougth I'd pass that on.
