Win2000 pro shutdown/application errors

Hi all,

I'm having problems with Windows 2000 Pro on shutdown.

I get the error message explorer.exe not responding and I have to to the manual 'End Now' option, but sometimes its SysFader.exe that has the same problem.

In addition, at the same time this problem started occuring, I had problems loading applications, my HD is accessed but the programs never load, or they close immediately after loading. Happens most obviously with Word 2000, WinTV and various games (mainly older ones).

This happens even after a complete re-format and re-install of Win2000, although sometimes it can take a week or so before it starts happening. I had months of trouble free use before this, but now it won't go away despite many re-formats.

I've virus checked my computer without result, and I've tried SP2 and SP3, still no go.

I understand that there's a registry fix for the shutdown problem, but will this also fix the malfunctioning programs?

Cheers,
Scottly

I have experienced exactly the same thing. I'll be watching your posting to see if anyone has any explanations/clues as to why this started happening.

have u tried a spyware check? if u have, then ignore this reply.

if not, then download adaware, and spybot search and destroy. give those two a spin and see if u find something.

welcome to TIMO Scottly and bflint@attbi.

Misc

Hi all,

Should probably have posted this a bit sooner, but I discovered the problem. It was the Win32.Parite virus, for some reason Norton AntiVirus 2002 wasn't picking it up.

This virus attacks .exe files, and prevents them from working properly, but it takes time for some .exe files to be infected. I had burned some infected files onto CD and was using them when after reformatting, so the problem kept re-occuring.

To fix it, I downloaded and installed Grisoft Anti-Virus Guard, free from www.grisoft.com. It found about 500 infected files, surprising that anything could work after that!

I found that the best thing to do was reformat again, then install AVG before anything else. Unfortunately I had to download all my setup files again, including Win2000 SP3, over a 56k modem.

Hope that helps.

Scottly

That helps a lot! I was going in circles trying to figure this one out. I had the Win32.parite virus too, and knowing that, I think this time I'll be able to avoid it when reformatting/reinstalling W2K.

Two things:

FYI, I found another free AV tool that handles the parite virus: Trend Micro's free web-based tool, which they call "Housecall".

Second: the Grisoft AVG tool seems a little too "intrusive" to me. I've now got Norton AV 2003. Out of curiousity, are you keeping the Grisoft AVG tool running on your machine after you got rid of Parite? If so, how do you like it? And, do you know if it easily/completely un-installable?
