Mouse with linux ?'s

ok, I installed mandrake 9.1 on my laptop, and the laptop mouse was working fine, but I wanted a regualar mouse, so I pluged a Ps2 M$ mouse into the computer, and it worked fine also, then I shutdown the computer, and now I wanted to start it up again, and now neither work

The second time you booted up was the PS2 mouse still attached or did you attach it again after it had booted and you realized that the mouse pad didn't work?

Probably Drake rewrote your XF86Config file for the PS2 mouse:

1. try booting it with the PS2 mouse attached

2. try plugging it in after booting and hit <ctrl><alt><backspace>

I installed Drake 9.1 on a Fujitsu lifebook with a USB mouse attached during install and it works only with the USB mouse, not the mouse pad. However, I have SuSE 8.2 installed on the same laptop and it works perfectly with either mouse separately or both together. I haven't had time yet to compare the two configurations to see if I can setup Drake the same way.

so should I boot up the notebook with the mouse attached or should I attach the mouse after it is booted? I seems like your 1 and 2 are countering eachother.

I think he wants you to try both and see which works

A good thing to do would be to post the text of your XF86Config-4 file (found in /etc/X11) so we can see what exactly is going on (read: "so someone besides me can see what's going on").

Um, any chance of posting the XF86Config file? That would let us see what has happened.
You may need to copy it to a floppy to post it here, so if you're a newbie here's a step-by-step.
When the box starts up, type linux 3 into the lilo prompt.
Login as root
insert a dos formatted floppy
type
Code:
mount /mnt/floppy
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /mnt/floppy/
Take the floppy to whatever machine you use for techimo and post the contents of the file in a code tag.
If you're not a newbie and are competent in posting the contents of the file yourself - I apologise. It just saves people asking "How do I do that?" and then having to wait for a reply.
