Systems Stumper for you...some DVD-r's play, some dont!

Hello all, I think I've got a stumper for you. I am having trouble playing some DVD's. *cough*These are backup copies of course *cough*. I have had no problem with some movies, but others arent detected by the drive. When I insert the DVD's, it shows up as if nothing was input into the drive. (Yes, I have also repeatedly cleaned the drive lens as well). I know that they are good DVD's because I have seen them play on a playstation and a Compaq Presario 2100US w/XP.

I have tried to fix it by deleting the old WinDVD,removing the Drive, and reinstalling the most updated Service Pack. (Compaqs recommendation) I have tried playing them with all sorts of programs to no avail.

I am running a laptop Compaq presario 2110US with Windows XP.

The drive is a CD-RW/DVD player and lists in hardware as:
Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-R2312
Ztechware OCDE SCSI CdRom DEVICE

I have tried to watch the movies with:
Direct DVD 5.0
WinDVD 5.0, also tried versions 3.2 and 4.0
Windows Media Player 9.00.00.3008

I have run out of ideas of what to do. Can anyone help??? I dont know a lot about DVD's that have been copied or if it could be a DVD+or- problem, codec, or Decoder. Any help would be appreciated. Please reply.

Some of my audio CD's don't work. They btw are all copies of my originals. They get too trashed too fast in the car.
But some of them do play, and on certain days some don't play that played the day before.
I feel your pain man.

Migh be your DVD drive, different drives have different error correction in the firmware, and will be able to play things other drives won't.
Since the DVDs seem to play fine on a PS, that would be my only guess.

While it probably won't help, you might check to see if there is a firmware update for the drive.

Media Thanks All

To everyone that responded, thanks for the help. I have gone through every idea for fixing this drive, and unfortunately nothing worked. Oh well...I ended up getting sick and tired of this problem so I am picking up a DRX-510UL, Sony External Combo Drive. Supposedly this should not have a problem detecting anything from what I have heard so far. Hopefully thats right. Seriously though, thanks for givin it a shot.
I'll be picking up the Sony tomorrow unless yall know of any problems with it.
