memory not detected after installation

i attempted to install a second 256 mb stick of memory last nite. after in installed it and rebooted,i went into the system specs to see if it was detected. it wasnt.still only 256 instead of the total of 512.it should be detected automatically, correct?

then i shut it down again, took out the working stick, and installed the new one in that slot.

now it seems i have a new problem to work on. none of the memory, new or existing stick, will work at all. i get a code on the digital read out of "C1"with a steady beep every 2 seconds or so.

C1 stands for "detect memory: auto detection of DRAM size, type and ECC;auto detection of L2 cache(socket 7 or below)"

i have 3 slots for ram,max capacity of 1.5G.

one of the slots i cant use because the corner of the vid card is in the way.

i switched between the two sticks, using both sticks in different slots, back and forth, every conceivable combination,i even used the third slot by the vid card and held in the stick with my fingers and tried to boot.

all to no avail.

should i go have those sticks tested??

specs: epox 8kha mobo;xp 1500 cpu;30 gig wd hd;visiontek gf3 ti200 vid card; xp pro.

upon inspection, the new stick is about 1/8 inch smaller in width than the old ram,but they both have these numbers in common: 256MB,DDR,266MHz,CL2.5

my guess is it is a problem of proper seating and contact than something wrong with the ram sticks themselves.

each slot has a plastic clip at each end. i push the stick in till it wont go in any farther(being sure that the off-center notch lines up)and pulling up the clips on each end to lock it in.

havent tried it yet this morning. will wait for any suggestions.

thanks.

Yes you should have them tested...If possible, get some other RAM and try it ALONE in your system, to make sure there is no damage to the motherboard.

This is also my first guess ...
Also, not being able to use the first slot could be causing the problem!

You know that i have the same board as yours .. using all three slots 256MB X2 and one generic 512MB stick, working as perfect as you might expect.

So the board is out of question IMO, its either a bad stick of RAM or because the blocked slot issue. (its the first slot right?)

the blocked slot it the one closest to the rear(left one ) of the case, its closest to the right"end" of the vid card. the little clip that holds in the stick wont work with the vid card in. the card extends about an eighth inch further than it should, making it impossible to pull the clip up and seat the ram at that end.

havent had a chance to do any testing as of yet(my sticks or to get another one to try) but i did attempt it again this morning ,switching sticks back and forth between the two slots.

the original slot i had the original stick in was working fine till i took the original stick out,now none of the slots "seem" to work at all.

will let ch`all know if anything changes,eh??

thanks everyone

well, got both sticks tested today. and they are both good.

since i cant even post into bios, could something be disconnected, like the keyboard or something? there are no lights on the keyboard while its beeping away.

could i possibly have zapped something with static juice?

i m definatly stumped.

It's possible something was zapped by static. Do you have a different video card so you can try putting the RAM into the first slot?

i took out the video card altogether and tried the third slot. i broke the plastic clip which was blocked by the vid card. but i held it in place and i still get the same error code.

then i tried every combo i could think of between the three slots and the two sticks. still the same code.

me thinks its time for a 8RDA+

sure dont understand what i did to cause this

unless there are any other ideas..........its off to newegg

me thinks it is time you learn to install a DIMM in a DIMM socket properly.
