How long will an overclocked CPU last?

I have the Athlon XP 1700 DLT3C. My temperature is currently at 32șC. It'll probably be even lower within the next 24 hours since it takes a while for Arctic Ceramique to become effective. I usually leave the computer on 24/7. If I overclock it to 2GHz how long can I expect the computer to run for.

Don't do alot of overclocking personally, I've heard that although it does shorten the life of the PC, it will be very very obsolete by the time it fails, couple years would be my guess, all depends on other factors

That's assuming it will get to 2ghz...it depends...what really kills the CPU is pumping more power into it, not the heat...increasing the voltage increases the heat...

It just depends on the CPU...it won't last nearly as long though.

It will last much longer than you will ever need it. Don't worry 'bout it.

In fact, this whole "overclocking shortens cpu life" thing is really just theory, not fact.

Many years ago I performed my very first overclock by bumping up the megahertz of a 486DX2-66Mhz to 80Mhz. Percentage-wise that's a decent overclock. That machine is still running today, nearly 10 years later. I gave it to my neighbor a few years back and I still see him sitting out in his garage doing something on it every once in a while.

Most all cpus I've owned since then have been overclocked at least slightly (some more than others). I've never had a cpu fail. I've had a few motherboards fail on me. A hard disk or two. A monitor. Floppy dirves. Modems. Sound cards. But never has a cpu quit working for me. [shrug] Go figure.

by the time it fails because it is overclocked you will have long since upgraded it . i still have a celeron 300 overclocked to 450 . i don't remember how long ago i got it but it has to have been running at least 5 years now . and it has been at 450 since i built it .

It'll probably last about 20 years longer than you'll use it.

yup, it will last way longer than you will need it for..

I got my P-II like.. prolly 5 years ago, its a 350 o/c @ 504mhz.. still runs sweet, and as you can see, 500mhz is a pretty *** processor now.

My friend has a 450mhz pentium 2 slot 1 cpu overclocked to 520mhz. Its old as heck but it still works.
