How Do I Create a Vector Image?

Photoshop 7.0 Question

How do I create a vector image out of an image that I already have as a jpg? I want to be able to rescale an image but not loose it's quality. Can this be done? If not, how do I go about converting a layer into a vector anyways. It would still be nice to know.

I got Macromedia MX, but I'm not too good with it yet.

FireworksMX is also a vector based graphics program, which is included in the Macromedia MX Studio.

Use the Pen Tool in Photoshop to create vector paths, shapes, etc.

Also, any text layer can be converted to a vector path/shape.

However the tool of choice for working with vector images would be Adobe Illustrator.

By default, any images that Macromedia Freehand/Fireworks/Flash create are vectored. I think Outpatient is right about the pen tool (always confused the hell outta me though) in Photoshop for an existing image.

CorelDraw (up through at least version 8) had an Autotrace feature for converting bitmapped graphics to vector graphics, and I can't believe that Adobe Illustrator doesn't.
