What is Mozilla?

I have heard people mention Mozilla here often. So, I found it and downloaded it to see how it worked. When I loaded it and began using it, it looked allot like Netscape and also seemed to be linked to Netscape somehow.

Could someone explain what Mozzila actually is or give me a link that will explain it. Is it a scaled down version of Netscape? Sort of like Kazaa-lite to Kazaa?

It is kind of like, but isn't an alternate version of netscape. Basically, after Netscape 6 was such a bad browser, Netscape released the source code to it. A team took up the code, and changed it into what Mozilla is. Netscape 7 is based on the work the Mozilla team did. It's not like Kazaa litye though, because:

a) It's more feature rich than Netscape is (usually, depends on ver. ##s). It does everythign Netscape does and more.

b) Little is removed from Netscape (like spyware, ad banners, features, the such). Only the stuff that was not necessary and the original code base were removed.

c) It's not a modification to Netscape. It's a seprate program completely. IT was made using the Netscape source code (K-Lite was used by tinkering with the Kazaa files, no Kazaa source code was used.)

1.1) What is Mozilla?
Mozilla is a project to continue Netscape Communicator as an open project. The project is maintained by employees of Netscape (now a division of AOL), RedHat, some other companies, as well as contributors from the community.

ok, that makes sense. I have Netscape 6 loaded. Mozilla appears to have a much more compact feel to it and I like that. So, I think I will axe netscape and get to know Mozilla. Thanks for the info.

The source code was released long before that...before AOL even bought Netscape...back in the 4.x days. They decided not to use that 4.x code and to start from scratch instead, so in essence, mozilla was hardly based on Netscape 4.x source anyway. The result was Mozilla an almost entirely new browser with an entirely new rendering engine..."Gecko".

Netscape 6 is based on Mozilla and Gecko, just as Netscape 7 is. You have to go back to the Netscape 4.x days for a Netscape not based on Mozilla.

Modern Netscapes came from Mozilla...not the other way around.

try firebird it is a stripped down version of mozilla more or less like saying kazza to kazza lite...firebird has most if not all the features and looks of mozilla but in a smaller package its a nice lil browser...one great thing about both of them is that they are open source so anyone with programming skills can d/l the code and tinker with it it...and alot of the programmers release the personal builds the design.

I'd just like to make this clear for all those who treid to make a point to say I was wrong about Mozilla in past threads.

The Mozilla project started near the end of life of the 4.x line of Netscape Communicator.

Netscape 6.0 and above are based off of the Mozilla source
Many people of course threw their own explanations in my face saying Mozilla is based on Netscape 6, and that Netscape 7 is based on Mozilla.
