going from ME to 2K

alright, light up a bon fire, i am moving my main rig up to 2K... im ashamed, but i seem to have no choice at the moment. When i got my 8RDA+ and 120GB 7200RPM 8MB cache computer, i was getting it for the raised HDD bandwidth... HA!

I went from a data transfer of about 30MB to 5.5MB per second. its like trying to operate a gravel sled underground. Who knows how much funtionality im gonna lose here, but ill post up what % of my life i lose.

ohhh man, and gaming... so many programs i can never use again. [old ones]

ahh well, ill just make a dual boot

*EDIT* i forgot to mention that i cannot or seem not to have DMA enabled, yet there is no option that i can find anywhere. whats up with that? I mean, it took me 2 hours to defrag this thing with 4 GB taken up.

In Device Manager, under Drive Properties, Settings, ensure that DMA is checked. If it's "grayed out" you may not have the proper chipset drivers installed or possibly DMA is disabled in the BIOS.

Actually I think you enable DMA in W2k on the IDE controller themselves rather than on the drives in Device Manager. Still, I use the Via IDE tool to get my DMA settings right. You can read about it here:

Welcome to the wonderful world of Windows 2000. I think it's the best OS Microsoft ever made. I like Linux but I'm a really big fan of Windows 2000. Hats off to them for that.

Once you install 2K, make sure to install at least SP2. Before that, by default it wouldn't do ATA66 or faster.

I have Windows ME at home and use Windows2K at work...amazing how rock solid Win2K is! I agree with Scott Tiger on this one! 2K is great! I doubt I could install it at home though...I do not think I could part with my games!

I have heard that 2K is a poor gaming OS. I could have heard wrong, but that seems to be what most people say when compared to other releases.

You heard wrong then because 2k is either the best or second best gaming OS (WinXP is good as well). 2k is good because the superior memory management allows it to maintain speed even after playing for a good 6 hours straight.... if you ever play that long. ME is one of the worst because if you play one game then switch to another then to another, ram just seems to "disappear" after each game transition.

*mumbles to self: when did this thread get any activity???*

well im up and running at 100% and i sure do like it, although, other than the fact that some options are better, others not so good/im not finding them; its an experience. My HDD speeds are up to 40MB/sec now, so im very happy with that. gaming still runs about 95% of what it used to. other than that, my only beef is that the service packs are so huge!

Im downloading SP3 on monday at a friends network, so hopefully that heals some of my networking issues, and other quirks.

thanks for the DMA advice, ill check it out on monday as well. [under ME] i seem to have accidentally done a dual boot, but WTH right?

how can i blast ME from the dual boot and have single boot 2K? just format the whole HDD? [120GB takes a long time to format though]

I guess I have never noticed that with ME...I play games non stop for hours on end with no problem. I have had ME running for 2 and 3 weeks and gaming for 3 or 4 hours a day before with no performance loss that I could notice. If 2K and XP are better than that...make sme glad I am installng XP!
