New build problems

OK here's the scoop and I hope someone can help.
System seems to run OK. (windows, benchmarks, burn-in tests)
When I try to play a DVD or VCD the player software says:
"unrecognized disk format" or VCD's sputter
However if I copy an mpeg file to the HD it plays just fine?
I have tried switching out the CDRW & DVD drives and same results. the drives have been used and they are wired up correctly (used both drives to install the OS & various other programs), I've tried switching out the cables and still no go. (using rounded ata cables)
All bios & drivers are known working versions. With the exception of DVD's & VCD's the system runs OK

system specs:
P4 2.66 (533)
ECS L4VAX2
1 GB DDR PC2100 (generic)
ATI 9700 Pro AIW 128mb
Computer geeks silver case w/ 350w PS
WD 100gb 7200 ata133

any sugestion would be appreciated.

Is it always the same disk? I have one cd that drove me crazy everytime i tried to play it I had some issues and I RMA'ed a drive and did countless re-installs just to find out it was the disk. Other than that have you updated your firmware? what dvd drive are you using I'll look around for ya a bit and see if I can find anything that might be of some help

I have a couple VCDs that do that to me a lot...it seems like when it does it, something else is using it though (like windows explorer)..dunno if that'll help you though.

Tried several VCD's & DVD's & Confirmed reliable burned data disks. DVD's & VCD's played fine on another system.
Firmwares for the drives are OK as the drives work on another system with the same OS installed.
