Safe Mode -XP

I'm running Windows XP and have a problem. I switch on the computer and received a message that I should follow the following option because I apparently tried to install hardware and a problem arose. I have not tried to install any hardware and cannot understand what is happening. These are the options I get

Safe Mode
SsfeMode with Networking
SafeMode with command prompt

Last Known Good configuration

Windows Normal

I tried all five options. None take me any further in booting the system.

I tried by going into the BIOs to see if any setting was out of place. It all seems fine. I tried booting from the CD with XP operating system(by setting 1st boot selction in bios to CD) this went on to loading the files as usual. I pressed F2 to proceed with the Automated Recovery System floppy disk. I inserted the disk when prompted, then the message came back that the BIOs needs updating. How can this be so when the motherboard/BIOs is the latest?I tried downloading the same bios(gbt 8ID533_F4 )from the motherboard manufacturer and replacing the Bios. Whilst I was able to do this ,it did not solve the problem and I am unable to boot up to start computer.

How can I get the computer to boot fully.

OS - windows xp
motherboard gigabyte 8ID533_F4 version released 20/11/02

Bios : Awards oftware inc

Thanks for your help

Id try last known configuration again

If none of these are working, you have a seirous problem

Possibly your harddrive has many bad sectors

How old is the computer?

Last Known Good Configuration does not advance the boot process .The timer counts down from 30 second to zero and the default Windows Normal kicks in.This dos not work either.None of the options work so i may have serious problems.

The computer is 3 months old :

2ghz celeron processor
256 mb ram
brand new

You could try to go through the XP setup process from the cd again and do a Repair

I am using Norton Antivirus 2003 symantec-. When I put the CD in the I cannot get past the point where it has loaded the setup file then gives a message that the BIOS needs updating. Pressing any of the keys does not solve the problem.

i think it is a mobo problem. my cousin had a similar problem and ended up changing the mobo...

try putting the harddisk in another machine and see what's goin on!

i'm hoping u've got data backups ...

not sure about this, does norton antivirus create a rescue disk set? u can try booting from them and doing a virus check

There's a nice tool that can save your a** from time to time and it's call Recovery Console:

To install the Recovery Console, perform the following steps:

1. Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive.

2. Click Start , and then click Run .

3. In the Open box, type d :\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.

4. A Windows Setup Dialog Box appears, which describes the Recovery Console option. The system prompts you to confirm installation. Click Yes to start the installation procedure.

5. Restart the computer. The next time you start your computer, you will see a "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" entry on the boot menu.

NOTE : Alternatively, you can use a UNC to install the Recovery Console from a network share point.

Hope this help
