setting up a Lan using wireless G standard

Hi, I am considering setting up a LAN using the new 802.11G standard and am uncertain about some of the limitations. What I want to do is set this up in an apartment complex and split the cost of a cable modem with a friend by doing so. The distance I need to span is 100 feet and this isn't really in a direct line of sight. Will this be at all possible? What would be the ramifications as far as signal and speed loss? Any and all help would be much appreciated.

There are alot of variables in how well it will work. I can see 4 other apartments from mine, and can get 2mb on all of them (not that I would do such a thing). Basically you will just have to try it and see what happens. Avoid 2.4 ghz phones too, they will knock it off the air.

I have tried the channel trick, both the phone and the AP, I pick up the phone and both my A and G go dead in the water.

Yeah, I set the phones to different channels, set the APs to different channels, spent quite a while tinkering and never got far. I know others with the same problem, may need to move the phone base or something, really not that much of a problem for me tho.

Yea I have heard about phones interfering that is why I got a 900mhz. I was afraid you would say that I would just have to try it. I guess I can take the stuff back if it isn't what I expect it to be or not up to par. Siliconjunkie, just curious as to these wireless LANs you can get 2mb from. Are they using any type of encryption or MAC access control? The security risk is a big scare for me. Thanks.

I know of Linksys has encryption options if you want to do so... WEP encryptions can be activated... and Linksys has Mac Filterings

Yes that is interesting, seeing how the A standard doesn't even work at 2.4 ghz, it works at 5 ghz.

On another note, I have a 802.11b setup for my laptop and the wife's system, we also have a 900 mhz phone, and have not have any problems so far, there is no line of sight from the AP to her computer, the reception is at Good most of the time, and Very Good once in a while (Excellent being the best)

And yes for sure please enable WEP. As well as password protect the AP, to prevent people freeloading your internet connection, or worst yet, looking at your files.

As far as wireless signal strength...... try this http://www.cantenna.com/

And as the others wrote.............. BE SURE to secure the connections.
