Outdoors Public Server Behind Linksys Router

Okay...

Ive been running a public server for StarSiege: Tribes (Best game in the world by-the-way) through my router by setting up a DMZ host. Thus finding out DMZ will allow exposure of the entire network (very bad). So now im trying to set it up through using Port Forwarding... But its giving me trouble...

Do i use Port Fowarding or UPnP Fowarding (whats the difference?)

Do I use TCP Protocal or UDP (whats the difference?)

Everything looks to be fine... But its still not working...

HELP!

My Tribes Server is set to Port 28004 (unused)

So application i put Tribes... Ports 28000~28009 Enable TCP Enable UDP set to IP:192.168.1.6 (what should it be... i just put .6) and enabled it...

Not working....

Please Help

Port forwarding/DMZ normally only works if you turn off the DHCP server.

DHCP gives every computer on your network a ip address that is behind the router.

www.whatis.com

search the letters for more info

no you will have to manually put in an ip address for every computer on the network in the TCP/IP settings

DHCP is nice for you constanting adding and taking off computers, alot of people use it because its more secure.

when i had my ftp i used to put it in the DMZ until they came up with a firmware update. now i have taken the computer out of the DMZ and just forward the ports. if i remember correctly port forwarding can work with computer on a DHCP but can have some issues. espically if the ip address change and you have to configure the router again.

again i ask do you have the latest firmware for the router?

you shouldn't have to disable dchp. if this server is going to be its own computer. just go it to the network connection settings then tcp/ip settings and set the ip, subnet, default gateway and dns's and it'll work that way and all your other computer will still use dhcp.
then use the port range fowarding to foward the port number to that ip you just made tcp and udp. click enable and apply and you should be golden as far as router settings.

edit. and yes. you can port range foward on dchp. i've done it. you just have to make sure that if you turn the computer off that you check your IP and make sure it is the same. which isn't hard. i did that as well. but i also only fowarded the ports when the server (game/ftp) was actually running.

and btw i have that first method up and running web/ftp right now so it dose work.

another btw. i use a linksys router.
