How to set up storage appliance on LAN

I have a 7 bay SCSI CD-ROM tower that has a LAN port on the back... no SCSI connector, so i guess this is supposed to be used as a LAN storage appliance only. The problem is, I cant get any of the computers on the network to recognize this tower, because I have no idea how to do it. I thought you were supposed to just plug it in and go to network neighborhood but I guess not. Please help me.

Are there any ports other than the LAN? Serial perhaps?

Um...it doesn't have a Windows OS so I'm not sure how Windows would see it in the Network Neighborhood...I'd think you need some kind of software from the vendor...have you checked out their website?

It would be very helpful if you actually post the product make/model.

It is manufactured by TAC Systems. Product Number 0068-2 2C

On the Front it says LanRedi and NetWorked by AXIS Communications.

Yes the Lan port is all it has. However there is a punch out where a SCSI port can be installed.

Right first off this will need a IP address the best thing i could reccomend is putting it on a single machine with a cross over cable and using a network analysis software on it. My guess is that it doesn't support netbios, which is what good old windows uses. If you need any more help try pm ing me

Just an educated guess, but could it be accessed by accessing the on-board Java applet, using Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer? It should have built-in support for SNMP V2 and MIB-II, LANRedi I believe can be managed from any SNMP console on the network.

You could hook it up and get a net scanner and see what the IP address is of the tower, or look in your router's config page to see what the DHCP assigned IP is(if you have a router that DHCP in enabled on). And then try pinging that tower to see if it responds. If so, try the usual ports like 21, 22, 80, 81, 88, 8000, 8080, 8800, and see if it will load up a page in IE or Netscape. It should be similar to how a router's config pages work.

HTH,

David

Might have more info later for ya...

Hrm, I can find all kinds of info about LanRedi and TAC Systems but no support info.

I do have a couple of theories:
1) It is already setup with a static IP and is functioning properly but you cant see it.

2) It is set to get a DHCP/BOOTP address.

Inside the box what is there other than the drives and associated cabling? Can you snap some pics?

there should be some hardware that interfaces the CD-ROMs to the get it connected to the network. From all that I've seen, it is configured through the web.

Just need to find out what IP and port, and then the rest will be relatively easy.

Yeah, I could alot of product info about it, but no manuals or anything whatsoever...

I'm still looking though,

David
