More DSL questions...

It appears that I may finally be able to get an ADSL connection

Will probably end up with Tier 1 768down/128up connection

I was talking on the phone to the customer service person for the ISP and they said that it comes with an efficientnetwork 5900 speedstream modem. Personally I've never herad of this, anyone else?

Secondly it says the connections are PPPoa... which it says is Point to Point over ATM.

How is this different from PPPoe (which ive heard of before).

It says that PPPoe connections are available upon request, which presumably implies for an additional charge.

I will also need to be sharing this connection with my dad's and my sister's computer. I was originally thinking just a 4port linksys router and running wires, however my dad doesnt me to do any drilling/tearing up the walls so he suggested wireless.

What equipment is needed to share an adsl connection over wireless, keeping in mind that I dont know much at all about networking and want to keep it simple.

Is there anyone that I would need besides a wireless router and wireless cards for each computer? The signal will of course need to go through the floor for my dads comp and through a couple walls for my sisters.

Thx,
Andrew

A 4 port linksys wireless router should work fine as far as PPOA that is much better than PPOE for the simple fact you usually keep your connection longer and don't get bumped like you do with PPOE. You normally retain the same IP address. As far as connection speed that seems a little slow for adsl and I wouldnt pay too much for it personally no more than 30 bucks or so. Any other Q"S just ask.

Oh and personally speed stream sucks you should opt for your own modem.

k, well thats the only speed they offer around here (its kind of in the middle of no where) unless you pay like 90-100 a month.

As for the modem, what brand / model would you suggest? Will another modem still work with the ISP without any problems

Any dsl modem/router should work if you know how to get into it and program the VPI/VCI settings for the particular provider but that is all they will tell you. As far as the price if they are going to charge you 50 or more a month you are better off upgrading to a business line and they will gaurantee your speeds.

Well, its not really a matter of service...

The 768/128 for 50/month is all they offer here and my dads not going to spend any more on any kind of upgrade or business line.

I guess since the speed stream comes free with the service I will just give that a try first, and if it sucks i might consider upgrading.

its your choice but they usually make you sign a 1 year agreement and if you are dissatisfied with it your options are limited. You cannot return the modem and they charge you a ridiculous amount for it. But you said it is the only option so if you want the high speed then I guess thats your only choice good luck. Who is the ISP verizon?

its a local isp called netsync that I am getting (http://www.netsync.net), but you can also buy it directly through the phone company, Alltel to whom you pay a DSL line charge (30 dollars) either way. Both are 50/month for 768/128 and i believe 90 for 1.5/256

Is this about right for the router?
