Wireless
Does anyone know how much it would cost me to put a computer on my network that is 8 miles away via wireless. Thanks.

While were at it, does anyone know if I can go to the moon for less than 100 bucks? Actually, it can be done, but wired would cost a lot less and go faster.

You dont. You have the comp online and network it through a VNC program. I know some people have modded wireless LAN cards to go 20 miles, but thats pretty in depth stuff.

If you wanted the signal to travel 8 miles instead of the conventional few hundred feet, you'll need a huge amount of power put into the signal. My guess is that you would have to open up the wireless router and exchange some of the resisters which either a resister with lower resistance or even just straight copper wire.
Trying to broadcast a signal 8 miles takes a lot of power.

It would be helpful for you to search this forum on "wireless". There has been better help given in the past. basically you will need to purchase a couple wireless bridges, or similar equipment, directional antennas, and related cabling. Considerable expertise may be needed to make it work well though. Seems to mostly depend on your line of sight along with other environment settings.
My guess would be a minimum of $1000 for equipment to purchase all items new.

Jesus guys.. what are you telling this guy =)I think for that distance the only way to do it is to
1) Run a Fiber Optic cable, due to the interference inherent in the distance. (Too Expensive)
2) Get a ISDN or lease line direct to the network. (Still quite expensive)
3) Do a remote dial in using PPP (tunneling for security)..(Too slow)
4) Setup a VPN, and connect to the network over the internet, again using encryption to protect data flow to and from the server to the workstation. (Best way IMO)

Well, I am on 56k, so VPN would probably be slow, right?

yeah, the speed will just be like you surfing the web, but a little better.
If your remote network is under your control, you can install a modem ona server there and set it up so that you can dial in, which will let you have a direct connection and get close to the top speed of 56K. (maybe 40-48)
