WindowsXP Root Directory

I installed Windows XP on my first partition, and then use Norton Ghost to clone that onto my other partition. Yea! Worked flawlessly and Ghost only took about 4 minutes to do it! Awsome program!

One problem though. Since my drive letter are C and D, when I cloned the partition over, the windows on Drive D thinks it's system root is on drive C. So when I install a program or soemthing, it defaults to the C drive\program files\. This really caused problems with Windows Update.

Isn't there just a few registry entries that link Windows to it's default directory and such. I should be able to just change these strings and live happily.

Any ideas?

yeah there are, but I'm not sure thats going to help you. I'm not at a xp workstation right now, but if you do a search in the reg for "C:/windows/" you should find it after some F3's. I don't remember the exact place. Your prob though is that it is not JUST contained there. If all programs were programed perfectly they would look there but lots are done badly or not perfectly so it may not check for things like that

I THINK I may have found it in the registry.
Here is the one to change your system root (where it thinks Windows is)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Windows NT >> CurrentVersion

Here is the one to change your program files directory (default directory for most installations)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >> SOFTWARE >> Microsoft >> Windows >> CurrentVersion

I guess I learned somethin new today
