I don't know if the deal is still valid, but StorageReview had a deal with Hypermicro for a free LSIU160 adapter with the purchase of a 18GB IBM 36LZX 15K SCSI U160 drive for 119.00 with free UPS shipping. Might be worth a look.

Well if you want to run a modern drive, LSI's U160 adapter is the best choice.

For a mix of modern and old drives, you should use a dual channel adapter like Tekram's 390U3W.

Bootable card, or nonboot? The lack of a bootable BIOS makes a card rather much cheaper than the same card with a boot BIOS.

The LSIU160 is bootable and the DC390U3W is a greatly versatile card too.

Note that 50-pin SCSI limits you to about 36 MB/s throughput. Decent SCSI drives are WAY faster than that, so don't let the interface put the brakes on it.

Either card I suggested are bootable. The LSI U160 card is a budget offering (one U160 channel, 64-bit 33 MHz PCI, LSI 1010-33 chip); the Tekram card is a full blown one (one U160 and one legacy UW channel, truly independent; 64-bit 66 MHz PCI, LSI 1010-66 chip; retail pack includes all the internal cabling you'll ever need).

Before you ask, 64-bit and 66-MHz PCI cards are backwards compatible to slower or narrower PCI slots.
