Kids jpg and thumbnails

I have a WD 120MB hard drive with 8 MB cache. A few days ago I reinstalled Windows XP on this drive (not a clean installation). I do not know what happened, but now it takes forever to open a folder containing jpg pictures. Any suggestions?

Install the latest updates and then defrag the drive? ( just guessing here )

Also check your CPU utilization while idle to be sure no other processes are taking the CPU time..

Defrag might work, but I would have done a new clean install to get all of the junk off the drive that could cause this.
