Internet Disconnect

I am frequently disconnected from the internet and I don't know how or why. When I am on-line, sometimes I get disconnected from the internet as well as the other computers on my home network. In order for me to restore the connection, I must unplug the power cord from the router, wait a few seconds, plug the power back in, and then it works. Sometimes I need to do this a few times in order to restore the connection. This is very frustrating as one can imagine. I would appreciate any and all comments and suggestions as to how to resolve this problem.

Many thanks.

That's usually the ISPs problem...I get it all the time too.

First idea is to change your firmware within the router. Try the latest firmware first (found at your router mfg's website).

SOrry about the missing information. My signature did not show up like I thought it would.

Systems:

MS XP Pro
1024 Ram
2100 Athlon Processor
OvisLink SR-801
Comcast Cable
3Com EtherLink 10/100 PCI TX NIC

I do have the lastest firmware update.

If it is the ISP, what are my options?

Thank you

welcome to techimo...and we don't have signatures thats why it didn't show. One suggestion is if you think its your ISP you might ahve them come out and check the lines to your house. Might be old lines and it might help to have them isntall new ones. if the whole network is going down then sounds to me like either a router issue or isp related problems. I'm assuming your using a cable modem as well?? if its a rental or lease they often use old returns you may need to have them bring out a new one.

edit: have you checked for the problem without the router in place. try directly conecting to your modem and see if it still happend.

and here's a link for a site that might be of a little more help if nothing else its a good site to checkout

This problem occurs through the router. I have had my computer hooked up directly to the modem and the other computers on my network going through the router. A "switch?" was used to connect everything to the router. Anyhow, when the other computers connections would go down, mine would still be working. I have tried several routers and the same problem exists regardless of which router I use. The cable lines are fairly new, only a couple of years old. The modem is a motorala surfboard SB 3100.

Thanks.

Ok, you've got one system connected directly to the modem and others connected through a router.

Are you using ICS through the one system? Any reason why you can't connect everything to the modem through the router?

I don't understand where the switch fits in.

The switch has been removed from the configuration. I had to have 2 IP addresses to play an on-line game with two accounts at same time, so I used a switch to connect to one computer and to the router. I no longer play that game and now only have one IP address.

So my set up now is--modem to router--to computers.
