radio on computer

how can I play radio over my computer. I know media player has something but I think that is download radio. I want something that will pick up regular local radio signals that I can play though my computer speakers. How do I go about doing this?

thanks

There's such thing as a radio tuner card, which usually comes w/ a TV tuner card, it simply fits in your pci slot.

You can check out most stations through real player, it's live radio, but IMO the quality does suffer. We have it on our radio station here, and it's only a town of about 4000 people.

Many, many stations have streaming audio, aka internet radio, but it helps to have a solid connection. If you have broadband, some stations stream at high data rates for near-CD quality. WMP has a Radio Tuner tab you can use to check these out.

An alternative to WMP are programs like MusicMatch Jukebox, http://www.musicmatch.com/, or Win Amp, http://www.winamp.com/. They have free versions with poorer quality or paid versions with better quality.

Also, AOL has their own radio, if you have AOL (but I wouldn't recommend you get AOL for the radio).

Another thing you can get is one of those audio cords where both ends are male and will fit into headphone slots. You connect one side to the headphone jack of your portable radio and the other side into the "line in" port on your sound card. As soon as you plug it in, the computer will start playing whatever sounds are coming from the radio

Instead of buying some expensive tuner card, you can spend maybe $2.50 for a little black cord that works just as good

This way also works for playing CD, cassette, 8-track or even record music through your computer

8-track, hahaha, I found that funny. I bet there's kids on here who don't even know what that is! I have, however, recorded albums (records) to CD via my computer and they pre-date the 8-track.

Woah, does that mean I can use my computer for a Tivo? That would be sweet! How could I set that up?
