o/c deleted my files!

I just typed THIS WHOLE THING and then closed the window by accident.

That only added to my frustration over this.

If you egt through reading this whole thing, I thank you. It's long, but my problem is a strange one.

I was overclocking my system and got my 2400+ (2.0ghz) to 195 x 12. Pretty impressive. I booted to windows and after about 3 minutes my AntiVirus cause an illegal action and froze. This told me that something was wrong so I rebooted. I lowered the DDR voltage and tryed windows again. I have two partitions set up. When I got to the boot select screen I noticed a mysterious third one. I use "Windows XP" partition to browse. "Games" Partition to play. Now there was a third, "Windows (Default)". I had no clue wtf that was so I skipped it and just selected Windows XP. It gave me a wierd screen, a very dreaded screen in ALL of my experience with windows XP. I have asked about this screen before and I guess NO ONE of the whole internet has seen encountered this screen. It must just hate me. It's a light-blue screen that says soemthing like "Your drive must be checked for consistancy" It then scans the disk. Well when it scans my disks it goes CORRUPT FILE CORRUPT! ERRO ERRO! DYING!! HELP KILL ALL!! It then trys to "fix" the errorunous files. Yea, it fixes them all right. Everyfile that windows says it "fixed" it just corrupts. I mean this because if I try to use any file that it has "fixed" they simply don't work. I have cheated windows by making backups of whole disks, rbooted and had it do it's "scan" and I watched find over 300 "corrupt files" and I watched it "fix them". Sure enough, the files couldn't be used now. The kicker is that the backups works flawlessly. Maybe m$ has a blacklist of files they like to kill.

Well that was a long time ago that that screen first appeared and I have formatted many a time since. THIS time when it came up, I immidialey skipped it and went into windows. It didn't even show the Windows loading screen before it flashed some Relaly dark blue (BSOD-type blue) with white Arial-type lettering in the upper left. it flashed this screen very quickly and then the screen went blank and it turn my HD off. Not my computer, just my HD.

Totally mind-boggled. I turned the system off, let it sit for a few, and cleared the CMOS jumper. I rebooted and that @#$%@ third boot selection was still there. Not a good sign. I selected Windows XP partiton and got the windows loading screen for about 3 seconds, then it went to the file checker screen. This time it didn't say anything except something like "AUTOCHK not found. SCNsomething.exe missing...." It falshed another dark blue screen for about .00000001 of a second and turned of my HD.

I was really starting to need a diaper. Well, I rebooted and tried that akward Windows (Default) parttion that appeared out of someone's #@$. As soon as I hit enter the system froze. I let it sit there for about 1 minute of no HD acticity and then I hit reset. I rebooted another time and checked the Windows XP partition. Same problem, achk whatever not found. A rebooted one more time and in a last-ditch effort to catch maybe a tiny drop of hope as I peered around the corner to look for light at the end on the tunnel, I selected my GAMES partition. IT ASKED FOR THAT @@#%$@$ "must check drive consistancy" SCREEN!!!!! I quickly pressed a button to skip it.Windows loaded just fine, and that is where I sit right now. That is where I am typing this from, for the 2nd time. I checked the main drive for any errors and nothing came up. I defragged it. I looked at the boot.ini for both partitins and they both were identical. Looking like this....

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdick(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windo ws XP"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Games " /fastdetect

Nothing seems wrong.

At least I can SEE the other partition so I can disect it from here and at least backup my files if need be. (seems like it is going to "need-be")

I have ZERO clue why this happened. I have ZERO clue why this "chkdsk" screen comes up when I start to try and overclock. I'm completely stunned. I thought the boot.ini was the ONLY thing that controlled that boot selection screen, yet both ini files look good.

It's getting late and like I said, I have typed this twice.

Hopefully someonw out there will help......please...........*tear*

Well,
Thanks.

UPDATE!!!!
I took a second glance at my boot.ini. Now I copied and pasted that direcly from the file. No use in typing it all out. Take a good look and you will notice that it says rdick instead of rdisk like the others. Why the hell would it change to DICK? Is this some kind of virus? Coincidence? Well, that took away that word WINDOWS (DEFAULT) from the boot selection.

UPDATE!!!!!
Now when I try and go into my Windows XP partition is give me the following error:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt
<Windows Root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

Please reinstall another copy of this file

I have had this same problem sometimes when I overclocked and ran to far out of spec, being too high an fsb and thus pci and agp too.

Are you running on default now?? I had a few times that I just set it back to it's default speed and it was okay.

If that doesn't help, install yer windows over it, and it should restore the files it says are corrupted.

This just seems like a Virus more than windows. I can't believe this happened from overclocking my prossesor.

Is there any way to Ghost a Hard drive and put it on a CD? So instead of formatting? and reinstalling and all that crap, you can just pop in a CD and have a fresh install.

Systems

There are virus' that will attack the anti-virus program itself, attempting to shut down AV protection before attacking the system itself. My guess is that a virus was already resident on your hard drive and was initiated around the same time you decided to overclock your system, it's just a horrible coincidence ...nothing more. If you Ghost your hard drive now, you'll also be copying the infected files over.

This case underlines the need to not only keep AV programs updated, but also the necessity to run full system scans on a regular (weekly) basis. Whatever fix you may find to your problem would probably not now return your system to it's original condition completely and a format (or 3) may be the only viable solution. Sorry and Good Luck with it!

It'd take alotta CD's. I just set up a partition equal to my C (boot) drive, and do a partition to partition ghost.

I doubt ya gotta virus. But, ya never know. Can you run an online virus test?

BTW, those auto virus checkers can cause more problems than they're worth. Shut the damn thing off. They're obsolete as soon as they hit the shelves anyway. I only run online checks, occasionally.
