Old Goldstar Monitor only works in safe mode

I have a 1992 goldstar 1460 plus monitor That works in safe mode but when I go out of safe mode, it is all garbled with lines going through the screen. I tried going to the advanced options and changing my refresh rate but it only said,"Use hardware default setting." I am using a gateway e-series PC with windows XP installed. I have a 2ghz processor and 256mb of ram. I tried using the lowest amount of colors and the lowest resolution (though I know it is capable of higher.). What is weird is the fact that when I boot it up, it does just fine all the way through the "loading window XP" part and then it gets really messy right after.

Thanks,
Grawss

I've got a couple in the attic that people have given me over the last couple of years. If I remember correctly that monitor will only do 640 x 480 and 256 colors. I don't remember its max refresh rate. Sometimes I hook one up to a PC I'm troubleshooting and if the Screen Area is set to 800 x 600 or 1240 x 680 in the windows display properties, then the display is really hosed because the monitor can't do it.

Safe mode and your POST and Windows loading screens are within specs for the monitor. Once Windows loads, the Screen Area switches to the res you have set it to (800x600, 1240x680, 16bit, 24bit, 32bit color).

Where are my manners? Welcome to TechIMO, grawss.

Thanks, but...

Thanks for the quick reply, but is there absolutely no way that I can use it? I want to be able to run programs at least. All my other monitors are hooked up to my other computers, and those are only compatible with there own monitors. I just want to run a couple games and programs (like photoshop and 3DSMAX5) until I can grab a better monitor.

You can try adapter default in settings but that monitor are not going to do much. As xeroid said the monitor are not capable at more than 640 x 480 but the color resolution depends on the video card. You need at least a 2meg video card to get 16bit at 640 x 480.

You went the best way. I have a Goldstar 1453 (June 1992) on another system, running at 800x600x32. This monitor won't accept anything else than 60 Hz.
