Opening a doc in win gives me strange a dialog box
A friend asked me this, "Whenever I open a document that has been saved in "My Documents", an annoying window comes up asking me if I want to make a copy. It says, " (name of document) is being used by [person's name]. Do you want to make a copy?" Is there any way to get rid of it?"
I've never run across this problem. Do you have an idea?
Thanks!!
David

What version of windows?
Does this only happen with .docs? Only in My Documents?
Is this a word dialog box or a windows dialog box?

That's the problem, I don't know any of that. I just now got an email from a friend, and was just trying to see if you guys knew anything real quick before I asked for same info.
Thanks!
I'll ask him these questions, and some more of my own, and try to post back here to see if you guys know...

OK, got some very good answers to some questions...
The problem is when he clicks "Start" and goes up to "Documents" and clicks on a file, it comes up with a box that says... "Example.doc is being used by Tom Jones. Do you want to make a copy?"
I want to know how to stop it from popping up, or at least know why it's doing that.
Version of windows: XP
Types of files trying to open: Word and Works
File types associated with this popup box: .doc
Is this popup dialog box from Windows, or Microsoft Word?: Microsoft Word
So, I hope you guys know the answer to why it would be asking this.
Thanks so much!!
David

Hi David.
I get the same problem on my Win2K boxes...
My 'Printing' machine is always logged on as mark, yet the machine I do most of my typing is normaly logged on as Administrator. I think that is the problem.
It is trying to make a copy of a file that was created using say for example name1 and then printing it to a printer on a machine logged in as name2.
Don't know, I could be way off. - But it does piss me off, and I've never figured out a way to stop it.
I will try logging in as Administrator on the machine with the printer as well, and see if that makes any difference.
Bit busy ATM, but will try later...

Thanks!
But does it do that to you when you're just trying to open up a file? See, as far as I know, he's not printing it but just trying to open up the file from the recent docs list on the start menu.
Thanks for any suggestions!
David

Yes, this happens when 2 people are working with the same file on a network. It is designed so that both people dont make edits to the doc at the same time and one overwrites the other. It sounds like another user has edited the file after he last used it.
Is he at work on a network or something when this happens?

Thanks for the reply!
It's his personal computer, and it's not networked with any other computer.
Could it also be that one user edited the file, then he tries to open it up and that's why it asks him that?
Thanks!
David

Hmmm, thats interesting. I am not sure but I guess it could be possible for this to happen when a different user on the same computer edits the file. Actually, let me test it out on my XP machine and I'll see if I can re-create the problem.
brb
EDIT: Do you know what version of Word he has?
