BF1942 online ?
I'm currently using a 1.5 cable line to play online, but am thinking about going back to 128 k for cost reasons (maybe) how much would the gameplay suffer?

Depends, what is your current upstream?
If your current upstream is capped at 128k then likely the actual gameplay will not suffer that much. If you get a 128k DSL line or ISDN line then your ping should be fairly good still. Even though it is not the fastest in the world, the circuits should be good.
Once you find a server with a good ping you should be ok.
Downloading maps will take longer, but other than that your general gameplay should not suffer too much I do not think.

Good, I hope that's the case, my current up is 256, so I guess I'd lose about half, but that's not terrible. The whole thing is more dependent on the upload speed than the download?

It is dependent on both, but a crappy upload will kill you just as fast as a crappy download. It is possible to get good pings on a slower connection (even dialup) if you can get a stable link with minimal packet loss.
DSL and ISDN lines should be much more stable than dialup, though you may still get bad pings to some servers. Start out with 128/128 and see how it goes. If it is too bad you can always up the speed later to something like 256/128 if necessary.

Are the cost differences really that significant? Or is money really really tight?
If it's the former- do tell. If it's the latter, don't tell.

128k up is plenty of up bandwidth for gaming in BF1942. im on a 1.5mb down/128kb up adsl line and consistently find anywhere from 50-100 servers at least with pings below 80ms. I have no problems with lag on those servers. I still think that BF1942 ping times are reported incorrectly though using the in-game browser.

The one thing to worry about is whether the ISP blocks ports.. I'm pretty sure Comcast is blocking me from playing BF 1942 online |

radio1, The cost difference is about $30, I figure it would be better spent in my daughters' savings account I've also taken a job that has me out of town a lot and I don't feel like paying for something I can't really use to the fullest extent. I don't think there are any blocks, but I'll check if reinstalling the game on my new computer doesn't fix the problem.

That is a BIG difference in price.
I can see your point.
