first scrape all of the pad off with something like a credit card. Make sure you get it all or almost all. Now use a rag to clean the bottom of the heatsink and get the rest off. Make sure its not abrasive as you don't want lots of scratchs as they will heat your CPU up. Now apply the AS3. Its always good to put some theremal compound on instead of the pads. I really have no idea why they put those on the heatsinks. They are terrible

really AS2, AS3, or whatever doesn't matter a whole lot IMO. Its like a degree diff if that. Where its at is the coating, thats what will make or break your temp controlling. Getting it just perfect so if you take anymore off you'll have to reapply because you took to much off. Making sure the whole core is covered as well. ITs tough but that can be a 5 degree diff between a bad coating and a good one.

just rememebr if you use as3 or any paste make sure you get all the pad that is already on the hs off , put a dab on the heatsink and rub it around with a lint free stowel so this leaves a "stained " look on the bottom of the heatsink . then put the paste ( what ever you are useing ) on the die of the cpu . you want this coat thin . sheet of papper thin . almost seethru . and you are good to go .

It does matter which thermal grease you use...AS3 is a HUGE improvement over everything else.

And then theirs the Arctic Alumina... But forget about that, as it isn't as good as the Silver. With something like this, just get the best. It's cheap no matter where you get it, so why use the throwaway pad of goop they throw in with your heatsink?

I still use my AS2 that I got last year from Newegg. Don't have to have the latest and greatest if you can save a coupla bucks.
