My friends just gave me a Compaq Presario 1200 XL300 because they werent using it anymore so I figured I would see if I could do something with it.. Well I just ordered a stick of 256 ram for 35 bucks. not bad and Im looking to upgrade the CPU. I went to PowerLeap.com and found the config for this notebook here it is...

Comments -----------------------

Now they told me to go with some package deal called "PL-370/T upgrade, which will currently take your system's CPU up to 1.4 GHz, using an Intel "Tualatin" Celeron with 256 of L2 cache" it costs 149.00 But now I did a search on price watch.com and found a 1.4 GHz Celeron Tualatin for 49.00... So I am wondering which I should go with.... why spend the extra hundred?? but they say that the "kit" comes with

"The PL-370/T™ is a patented CPU upgrade solution that meets 100% of Intel's official power and signal requirements for the "Tualatin" Pentium-III and Celeron processors, even when used in non- "Tualatin"- compatible motherboards. Our exclusive on-board GTL (Gunning Transistor Logic) conversion circuitry assures that the processor is never run out of specification. The PL-370/T gives you direct control over the processor core voltage and FSB bus-speed selection. We include your choice of Pentium-III or Celeron "Tualatin" processor, and the total upgrade package is covered by our 3-year warranty."

now will I be able to adjust the voltage on the mobo or do I need this kit? Also will my BIOS be able to handle this chip... or is there a better chip out there like a pentium 3 or something.. Thanks for anyone who can shed some light on this situation for me...

This being a Compaq, I doubt if the Front Side Bus frequency (the 66.4 Mhz thing) can be adjusted on that board. I'd look very carefully at whether the convertor needs a 100 Mhz FSB before you spring for it. This pretty much also rules out using a P3 in the board as well, since they run on 100 or 133 Mhz FSB's.

Compaq didn't want folks mucking about with the innards of their machines, so I doubt that there's a jumper or anything to change the FSB on the motherboard. You might take a look anyway. If it is possible to change the FSB to 100 Mhz, than you can pretty much use the Tualitin adapter or 100 MHz FSB P3 as you see fit.

As far as the voltage, the convertor does all the necessary voltage adjustments.

Edit: BTW, those over 1 Ghz Celerons (and the huge majority of P3's) are the Tualitin cores and will not work in your motherboard without the adapter.

presario 1200 XL 300

Dont bash me too hard lol on my first post... Haha I just dusted off my presario 1200 XL300 today. Well anyways I too just ordered my stick of 256 ram for it also and was looking to upgrade the processor. What HP told me on one of their online chat sessions is that they do not recommend upgrading this cpu.. Which I figured as much anyways but I did some poking around and found this site...
http://www.mgrudkin.clara.net/dip.htm

Now this is more for the AMD versions of the presario I noticed. But it looks like this guy is trying to get information on all the presarios. Well anyways HPs official stance on upgrading the CPU on it is. I could take it up to a p3 650 from the original celeron 600. Let me know if this 1.4 gig works out for you, Honestly for 149 to take it up to a 1.4 that would make the laptop functional again..

Keep me posted - As I will you
