defragmenting software opinions

hi

i currently have diskeeper 7 and just wondered if there were any better products on the market - (i'm running win xp pro) - also is the defragmenter that comes with win xp pro as good - it seems to take alot longer (does that mean thats its more effective) to defrag than using diskeeper.

i have read mixed reviews about diskeeper - can anyone enlighten me!

cheers
matt

I don't know too much about defragmenters, But I know Diskkeeper is supposed to be one of the best.

The windows defragmenter is a bit more thourogh than Diskkeeper, but it's not worth the sacrifice in speed, which is utterly horrendous.

Diskeeper is more suited for networks. Many of these third party defraggers have a lot of options like scheduling and defragging network drives and so on. I have tried them all from Diskeeper to Perfect Disk 2000 to the O&O Defragger and Norton Speed Disk.

My opinion is that the windows XP defragger, which is a lite version of Diskeeper 7, is pretty good. You don't really need any of these heavy duty defraggers. Better to spend your money on other stuff like better hardware and so on.

After trying everything, I'm back to the free XP built in defragger. You can schedule it also indirectly to run at nites between 3am and 5am every Sunday like I do.

Once a week is more than enough specially if you are running NTFS.

Norton Speed Disk used to make my hard disk a speed freak, in the day when W95 and 340 meg drives were king.... no more?

>i currently have diskeeper 7

which version do you have - the commercial version or the freeware one?

if you have the commercial version, then you're fine. it has all the features you need to fully defrag your drive. the freeware version is faster than the XP defragger, but it does a very simple defrag...it doesn't really reorder your directories nor does it offer things like boot-time defrag, etc.

the one i use is o&o defrag which has some of the best (IMO) features. it offers several enhanced defrag options such as by location/name, date/time accessed which can result in better system performance if you optimize it to your particular needs.

well as it is a cut down version of Diskkeeper i would doubt it. Also the retail version of Diskeeper can defragment the mft as well which the windows one cant
