ICS problems

ok, i just networked my xp pro machine and 98 machine. the network works fine, i can file share and use remote desktop (i am right now). only problem is, i cant connect to the internet with my laptop. they are connected with crossover ethernet cable i got it to work before i set up file sharing (the laptop floppy drive has a write protected problem) but i cant seem to duplicate what i did. how do i get internet? i tried the wizard, it didnt help at all, i tried the wizard after i set up the laptop manually with a static ip address, after the wizard, i couldnt connect at all. so i restored the static ip settings.

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For windows ICS to work the clients have to be set to have a dynamic IP address or it will not work. After you set the address it may take a while for the network to sort itself out again so just leave it for a bit.

This was the problem I had when I fist tried to use ICS.

Are you sure you set the other system to share it's connection?

"ICS problems". Those words seem to go together.

Have you considered using a router? The $50 you'll spend will save you more than that in Tylenol.

osprey, i have a router, but it is not the normal router with connectrions in the back, you need a special connection to go into the phone line, since im setting this up in my room and i have one phone line, i find this to be much easier, ive done file sharing and internet seperately, but not at the same time.

telexen, yes i do have my internet connect set up to share

neo, i tried what you said and changed the ips from user defined static, to obtaining them automatically (under TCP/IP options) on the client computer and the host. ive waited a bit (how long should i wait?) and it doesnt seem that they read each other anymore, the pings time out and they cant find each others computer names. any futher suggestions to help me out here, guys?

Don'tcha hate that? Sometimes it's a combination of running the wizard, rebooting, and running the wizard again that gets it.
