ThermalTake DuctingMod Installation

I've read the one review on the web relating to a installation of ThermalTake DuctingMod.

Anyone else have any experiences with this product to share.

I was planning to hook this ductmod between my Swiftech MCX400 heatsink and my Zalman Tornado 80*80*38 cpu fan to hopefully get more direct center cooling on heatsink.

At least that's what the ThermalTake literature says because direct area below hub of fan doesn't get good air flow.

I used to know a website that explained that in theory the design should work amazingly...but in reality it doesn't do anything...I can't remember why, and wish I could the site again

Yes, I will post results of tests with various fans & mods on the Swiftech MCX4000 heatsink.

The fans and hood arrive this coming week, the Y.S Tech TMD fan *5800 RPM) arrived yesterday, and it'a a pretty nice setup, also relatively quiet.

I did notice though that Motherboard monitor doesn't pick up anything on the Y.S. fan. I wonder why?

For each screw i'm using rubber washers on each side of fan case to avoid any fan case squeezing.

I kind of like the look of the Y.S. fan on this heat sink. Will see with the ThermalTake hood soon.

Test results:

On Pentium 4, 2.4a with Swiftech MCX4000 heatsink (both fans running with 12 V, temperature, rpm monitoring with Motherboard Monitor software

Y.S. Tech Tip Magnetic drive fan 74*74*15 mm (~5800 rpm, 35.5 cfm, 38 dBA) beats out ThermalTake DuctingMod with Vantec Tornado 80*80*38 mm (~5700 rpm, 84.1 CFM, 55.2 dBA)

Under moderate load (playing Black Hawk Down - first misson) Y.S. Tech fan had on average 3.5 - 4C lower CPU temp than with ThermalTake DuctingMod and Vantec Tornado.

Issues with Tornado & TT ductingmod:

fan noise, vibration induced noise onto ducting mod (even with rubber washers), more dfficult install, looked interesting on Swiftech heatsink, running at 5 V fan is still too noisy

Issues with Y.S. Tech

reasonable noise level, also has fan vibration which induces noise harmonics in aluminum case, easy to install on Swiftech heatsink, Y.S. Tech fan rpm not found in Bios or with any other monitoring software, running at 5 V fan noise is barely audible.

Summary: Does the ThermalTake DuctinMod work? Not with my simple test. Not Recommended

I made my own using a pice of dryer tubing. And used the fan on the side of my case and droped temps way down. cost was free.

By doing that though you're bringing in cooler air from outside the case...rather than the air inside the case...so of course it will be cooler.
