commands for extracting compressed files

i'm trying to upload a theme on Red Hat 8 and have been having problems extracting the file. It's a tar.gz file, basically a compressed file and if i use the gunzip command i can break it down to a .tar. but where do i go from there?

the easiest method when you have a tar.gz file is to issue the command tar -zxvf [filename].tar.gz. it will both gunzip and untar the file for you and create a subfolder with the extracted contents.

alternately, since you are using redhat 8, you can acutally just dougble click on it to open a nice graphical tool (ark) that will do the job for you, akin to winzip in windows.

alright i think i got that figured out. now how do i install the theme? i'm having major troubles with that. what file type are themes or are they folders?

themes ussually do not need to be exapnded - go to the file with the theme tool and it should be selectable.
