creating dns server

I am setting up a test network not connected to my existing LAn and it will not have internet access. The only thiong on it is a Win2K Advaced server box(want it to be my dns server), Aworkstation running Win2K and two network printers connected to these machines using only a 4-port hub. I have all the wiring done and now cannot see my printers. I assume this is because they dont have an IP for the network. Is there a way I can set the Win2K advanced server box to issue IP's to these 2 printers and the 1 workstation so they could all be seen using only the 4 port hub? I'm trying to avoid getting a router for the IP issuing if I can do it using Win2K AS. I tried to set it's IP to 10.0.0.1 using TCP/IP protocol but how do Make this my DNS server to issue IP's to the workstation and printers. I dont want to hook the 2 printers up locally to the machines as thats not how they will be set up after this test. I'd rather have them has network printers.

Do you mean DNS server, or do you mean DHCP server? Aren't DNS servers for Domain name resolution? I didn't know they could also issue IP addresses.

You must mean DHCP server. Yes W2K can do this. Go to programs, select Administrative tools, then choose Configure your server. From there you can setup DHCP on your server.

I'm wondering the same question as goldenbuddha on this on skit. What it sounds like what you are describing is setting up a Domain Controller? Which does excatly what you want it to do, if this is the case you will want to set your client up for DHCP. Then put in the address of the Domain Controller for the preferred DNS server in the TCP/IP properties on the client. This should take care of it for you because the domain controller will now issue you a valid IP address for the client. Hopefully this helps, if not then let me know.

could I do that by setting my server address to say for ex. 10.0.0.1 and then selecting default DNS server and pointing to 10.0.0.1 After that I would tell the workstation get a DNS from DHCP? that doesnt sound right? Basically th problem I'm having is I cant add the printers to these two machines(one server, one workstation, because they are not named. They are not named because they arent getting a DNS because nothing is assigning them right now. I just want the W2K AS to assign out 3 DNS's so i can see the network printers and name them for use on the W2K AS as a printserver also. Am i going in the total wrong direction?

BTW: wrong selection of words above....maybe confused everyone using IP instead of DNS
sorry...heheh

You don't have to make it a domain controller to be a DHCP server or DNS server. Just a member server.

When you setup DHCP you will define the "scope" or ip address range that the DHCP server will hand out ip's.

gonna get a dsl router to handle DHCP as the Win2K AS machine will be a Platinum for Windows server and doesnt need the extra workload. I should have it sometime today.

thanks for the link meese, I believe that will help out.
