Kids How do I change the association?

Well I thought I knew this one

Running Windows 98 first edition and Norton Systemworks. When I click on a zip file Norton opens and unpacks the files for me, so far so good. However I recently downloaded Linos Zip 6.1 as I wanted to access rar files etc that Norton couldn't do. Now that I've installed it whenever I open a zip file it is this Linos program that opens it, I never asked it to assign itself to zip files, as I prefer the way Norton opens them.

I've checked the folder options by right clicking on the folder and looking at file assignments but can't even see a zip extension to change, and I can't find the Norton exe file that would've opened it in the past.

Anyone help please?

Open Windows Explorer, then go to tools option (I think - can't recall what it's under in 98, but it's there somewhere), then go to the File Types tab. Then just fins the .zip ext and change the association.

Cheers
Mick

You should also be able to hold the shift key when you right click on a file which gives you the added option of 'open with' this will open a dialog box where you can select the app to run with that file. There is also a check box to always open that file ext with that app.

I'm not at home at present but I do know that I have tried both these suggestions, the zip extension just isn't in the files type list I don't know why either.

The Norton and Linos applications aren't in the 'open with' list either.

If the worst comes to the worst I'll uninstall Linos hoping that the association will revert to Norton.

That work in win98, griob?

Never thought it did.

Don't have a 98 install handy to check.

To be honest i cant remember Mick been a long time since i used Win98. Although I am nearly positive that i have been using that for some years.

Jonty when the dialog pops up to select the app type there should be a 'browse' button which will allow you to browse for any app that is not in the list.

I change file assosiations the loser way. I right click the file then select "open with". Find the program that I want to open it, select it then hit the box that says something like "always use this program" then click ok .

Yes, that does happen but I can't find the Norton app that does the unzipping!

Mickwash - this is what I get when I look in the files type tab, there is no .zip extension there!

I would browse around the norton folders and check the helpfile/readme to find what app handles zip files for it.
