Kids Install Linux on an DDO 160 Gb hdd ??

I got an maxtor 160 Gb hdd from staples(the offer), an ultra ATA/133. However my mb supports only upto ATA/100. So I had to use Dynamic disk overlay(DDO) to install win 2000. Now I am tryng to install red hat linux 8 on it.

The two methods I tried are:
1> Boot directly from linux CD.
2> Boot from linux CD after DDO is loaded(that's how I installed Win 2k)

In both the methods, it just probes for video card, etc & then it hangs when it tries to start Xwindows to continue setup. Power off is the only way to restart.

Any idea on how to go about installing Linux on large size hdd, esp. over DDO, would be gratefully appreciated.

There should be no problem installing an ata 133 drive in a ata100 machine it is backwards compatible.

I suppose the only problem would be if your bios could handle such a large hard disk. Didnt think this was a problem but i suppose it could be.

When your linux install is crashing when it tries to probe your video card would suggest that there is where the problem is. Havent used red hat but there should be somewhere for you to select your own video card. If you card is not there then go for standard vga just to get you started as you can set it up later after the install.

If you give some details of the hardware you have then perhaps some more familiar with Red Hat could lend a hand.

Oh, it doesn't crash while probing the video card. It finishes the probing process and last message I see is starting Xwindows followed by a blank screen and CPU freezes.
Yeah, the bios detects only 137 Gb. The installation manual also says that windows won't be able to detect the who 160, hence the dynamic drive overlay.

well if it freezes when it is starting X then it would seem that it is not dectectig your video card properly.

Again think the people here will need details of your hard ware such as Video card.

I have an Asus 7N266-VM motherboard with GeForce 2 video onboard. Video controller is detected correctly. I believe its the large harddisk .
