Systems smc 802.11a wap and pc card issues

here's the scenario... i just got dsl, using a vision net 202 er dsl modem router. it gets its ip addr using dhcp, and also acts as a dhcp server for my lan. i have 3 laptops currently wired on the lan, all running dhcp. all is well. i get a wild hair and decide to go wireless. i come across a smokin' deal on a smc 2755w wireless access point and a smc 2735 pc card. i hook up the wap to my lan and dive into the configuration from one of the wired machines. i enable dhcp client, and it sucessfully gets an ip addr from the dsl modem router. and now the problems begin... i can ping the wap from both the wired and wireless sides, but the wireless connection can't see the rest of the lan or the i'net. i have the wap dhcp server gateway set to the wap's ip addr (assigned by the router), but still no luck. the wap has only one rj45 connection, and i can't figure out how to create a transparent bridge through it. i only have one wireless client, the other 2 laptops will remain wired. beating my head against the wall hasn't helped, any other suggestions? thanks guys

You say you have the WAP gateway pointing to its self. Should it point to the private side ip on the router? All the WAP's I've worked with use static ip's.

Kinda hard to understand exactly how your setup but you have no need for any DHCP server services on the AP. Disable that. It is merely a dumb passthrough device. Getting a client IP is fine but that would just be for configuration purposes. How many WAN IP's do you have from your provider?

kwebb,

i only have one wan ip. i disabled dhcp in the AP, and set the default gateway of the pc card to the router's ip, and voila! we have internet! and so now i happily surf... for about 5 minutes. the card disconnects, then reconnects in about 10 seconds. another 5 minutes go by, and disconnects again. i move the AP to within 10 feet of the laptop, same deal. i disabled turbo mode and forced the AP to 6mbps in the hopes of improving the range, with no luck. i was hoping to surf from my deck outside, but for now i'm back to dragging a cat5 behind me... thanks guys for all your help so far!!!

If your running XP, disable XP's zero wireless configuration utility and use the Cards driver and utility software instead. Should solve your disconnect problems, unless you have hardware that may be bad.

Go to the services snap in in the control panel. You might have to go through the Administrative tools folder in the control panel to get to the applet. Once your into services, find Windows Zero Configuration. Double click it. Stop the service and change it to manual on startup instead of automatic.
