Logon scripts are typically batch files, they go in the netlogon share of the PDC/other DC.
They are then run depending on how you have it set up - ie per machine, per user, or per group. This is set on the user properties on the PDC.
By batch files, they are scripts of DOS commands, if they are run on a 2k/XP machine, and you name them .cmd instead of .bat, you get a pile of extra commands you can use.
On your NT/2K server, go to help and search for logon scripts. That will probably explain it better than I can.

I also generally use vbscripts/WSH. Windows 2000 Scripting Guide is a fairly good (if not cheap) book providing an introduction to the topic with plenty of useful examples to get you started.
