Mp3 encoding

I'm doing some stuff that requires me to encode audio. I have no clue what some of the other selections are, but I know mp3 is very good quality for how small the file size is. The problem is that I don't get a lot of options from the encoding options window. I don't get the higher bitrates that I want. I get like 18kbits/s, 11,025 Hz, Mono 2kb/s. I want the 48kHz and the 128bit rate.

I THINK I need to download an encoder codec. (If im right) Where would I get a good one, preferably free.

That's the integrated codec, it doesn't allow high quality encoding.

Get bladeenc or something.

LAME is the best MP3 encoder you can get...it's only an encoder though...download a program like Exact Audio Copy to use with it to extract the files from a CD.

Ok, I REALLY can't find anywhere to download LAME. All I see is open source tar.gz files.

Any help? I figured since it is the "best" and "quickest" it should be a tad easier to find.

Hi.

I use CDex to encode mp3s and rip CDs. It's a great program and free. You can throw the LAME encoder in it, if you like.

The second link contains a special version of CDex with the LAME encoder/some tweaks in it and a web guide on how to use the program all the way from encoding to titles and playlists. If it were me (and I did do this), I'd just start with the second link, download all the stuff, read the guide and start ripping/encoding.

I have used CDex for 2-3 years and that guide is easiest I've seen. The CDex website also has a good forum setup, if you want to read about the nitty gritties like, which beta of LAME encodes best.

I agree with radio1_mike 200%. I rip and encode tons of audio, this program is great. I couldn't believe it was free! The only weird thing is you have to figure out how to set up the folders for the audio you rip.. so read the help section, and change the default settings to suit your needs.

You can choose what bitrate to encode the mp3 depending on what's important for your project (sound quality, file size, both).
