if you get the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard the soundcard on it is awsome. so you save 112 bucks plus it comes with the Nfroce 2 chipset.

of course you would have to buy the cpu still.

i take it hes a gamer?

I don't think that the board you chose supports registered memory modules, so you will need different ram. You'll need at least PC2700 to support the 3000+ anyway. Also, why not get two seperate cd drives? A combo drives makes copying disks annoying.

Careful with the ecc registered memory. Not all mobos can use it. It's normally for server boards.

Did I miss something? I thought I was within $50 or so of what you posted.. If you have $700 more to spend, I want to go shopping again

Either way it's gonna be a nice setup

a7n8x deluxe is a much better board than the A7V8X-X . alos i would go with the xp2500 and save another 160$ get pc3200 ram and clock it at 185 x 11 instead of 166 x 11 that gives ya 2034 and it should do it no problem . even with the retail heatsink . also no need for a sound card the a7n8x has nice sound onboard already . i would try it before u get a sound card and if you think it isn't anuff then get a sound card after . with the video card i would go with the 9700pro or aiw ( if he is going to use the added stuff the aiw gives , if not just get a 9700 pro ) over the 9800pro . the difference in performance isn't worth the 100$ difference in price ... in the real world you will not be able to tell the 2 apart . in benchmarks yes but to the eye you can't tell them apart .
