Outdoors Catalyst Drivers in Win XP Pro on Radeon 9700 Pro

This has been bothering me a while.

Currently, I am running a Radeon 9700 Pro (128 MB, TV Out,etc) with drivers that are a few versions old (downloaded them about 3 months or so ago). I have tried updating them on several occasions to the newest ones but whenever I have XP boots up and everything and after I change the sreen setting back to 800x600 the screen just gets all blurred and chopped up. This has only happened with newer Catalyst drivers and only XP. So, I figured I would again try to download the newest drivers (6.14, realsed 5/14) , thinking that perhaps those particular drivers were just not good. Again, after installing and booting up the screen becomes all distorted and blurred. Another symptom I noticed was that, in the event when it did not blur right away, the sliding menus, dragging windows, and opening up folders was incredibly slow and jerky. I knowingly made a system restore and reverted back to old drivers, and bam, everything is fine again. I did not, however, uninstall and/or delete the ATI folder before installing. I just the program overwrite them. Might that be a problem?

I have no idea why these drivers would not run fine on this machine, as older drivers have before. I have not changed anything in the BIOs or card settings lately. I have also tried various refresh rates (due to the fact I have a crappy 10-year old monitor) but to no avail.

Any and all help is appreciated.

System Specs:

OS: Windows XP Pro (not with SP 1 yet,but with many critical updates)
CPU: AMD Athlon T-Bird 1.3 ghz
RAM: 384 PC 133 SDRAM
MOBO: PC Systemboards Socket A M805LR
Video Card: ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (built by ATI)

I think ATI reccomend uninstalling old drivers before installing the newer ones.

See if that makes any difference

I've never had a problem installing the Cat drivers with my 9700 Pro, R8500, or Radeon 64mb SDR. My normal routine:

1. Uninstall the existing Control Panel via Add/Remove Programs.
2. Uninstall the existing display drivers via Add/Remove Programs.

reboot.

1. Install the new Cats.

reboot.

2. Install the new Control Panel.

reboot.

No problems ever.
