MY FTP
I am using Serv-U. How do I make it so that my firends use there names to login and a common password? Is that possible? Without setting up an account for every person? Using anonomyous users but somehow with a password. I see people doing this all the time in the internet. "Use your username as the login and ***** as the password."
Thanks

Some servers allow this, some won't.
If you can't setup an open account (no username, only a password) then servu doesn't suit your needs.
I think bftp server is able to do that.

Well, if making an open account suits your needs, why not just make one username and password set?
The only real reason to keep accounts seperate either each user to have different rights, or keep them in seperate folders...if you don't need to do either, then just make one account.

Can't use Serv-U for that, AFAIK. You'd have to make each person a separate account. Then you can use the admin panel to track what they d/load, how long they are in, etc.
But it won't work unless each person has a separate account in Serv-U, I reckon.
What's so hard about setting up an account for each one, though?
Cheers

I DID IT! well not really. The problem I had with one single account was that for some reason when 1 person logged in, they would login abut 5 times and that would reach the max users. I found a tiny checkbox that said only allow 1 login per ip. Problem solved! I setup an account with a username and password and set 3 users (so bandwidth stay reasonable). ALL seems well! Thx!

If it logs in several times they're using a browser (probably IE) to log on...that or one poorly coded client.

Usually server softwares show the origin of the user (ip and the resolved dns) which you can use to identify people onsite.
I will soon setup explicit ip access rights for my server so I don't have to worry about unauthorized people.
Many people use multiple threads to connect to ftp servers, with private servers, that isn't very useful since not many people restrict bandwith usage per login (the idea behind multiple threads is that if bandwith is limited to say 10kb/s per login, you can get like 50kb/s with 5 threads).
I always set 1connection per ip.
