windows 2000 IDE problems

Motherabord: Asus A78NX Deluxe
OS: Windows 2000 SP3
CPU: AMD Athlon 2800+ (barton core)
RAM: PNY PC2700 DDR, 256MB (best buy, not the value ram)
C: drive: Maxtor 120GB Special Ed. 8MB Cache
Optical DrivE: Iomega 16x8x32x CDRW

Recently, my PC has been rebooting randomly (once at 1030 am and again at 130pm). I checked the event log, and noticed quite a few errors. Here are a few:

User: N/A
Computer: GO2FAST
Description:
The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block.
Any ideas? Motherboard or harddrive issue? There are other errors that follow in the sam elines of these. Here is what my IDE Map looks like:

Disk 0: 50.0GB C: 64.49GB F: (120GB Maxtor)
Disk 1: 74.53 GB D: (80GB Western Digital)
Disk 2: 19.08GB E: (20GB Maxtor I think)
Disk 3: flash card reader
CDRom 0: G: drive

I know that the 20GB has a bad block, and is at/near capacity. The 80GB is also at/near capacity.

Hmmm each error was on a different device
Are all the noted devices on the same controller?

they all use the board's IDE controllers if that is what you mean. I assume the Harddisk0\DR0 is my C: drive and Harddisk2\DR2 is my d:. Those are both on the primary HD controller. The CD rom is slave on the secondary, which has the Maxtor 20GB as the primary. I guess I will run chkdsk /xf on the drives to see if I can fix them or get some more info. I dunno....

Go to www.eventid.net and lookup the event ID's listed above. You may find something that can help you.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think its worth the $15 per year without know how good their service is to begin with.
Do you have a subscription there?

You don't need one to lookup event id's. Just click the "Search Events" button in the Navigation bar at the top of the page.

You can still search eventid.net for the events you have and get a description of the event and know solutions. The $15 is so that the links to microsofts site and other sites will work i think.

Have you looked at Asus's website for BIOS upgrades that might have to do with your issues? I had an IDE problem with an Abit board that was fixed with a BIOS upgrade. How long have you been running this configuration? Have you done any program installs or hardware installs just before the problem started to show up?

using the most recent bios and nforce drivers from asus. i looked around on eventid and it may be a couple of things. could be the flash card reader i have installed on my usb port; or it could be some software like EZ CD Creator i installed. need to check the event view against installation dates of various softwares.

thanks

Paul

same problem

Have you solved the problem?

I had the same parity and controller error with an EPOX EP-3VSA2 motherboard (which seems not supporting DMA with ATA66 UDMA devices ) and my old Quantum lc10 (20 Gb) winchester just recently .

The description of the problem and the solution (of my problem, and hopefully yours ) is at the MS Support Site.
