SLOW XP shutdown issue

I know that there are many threads out there about the well-documented slow XP shutdown problem, and I have tried all the solutions offered. These include the disable Nvidia Driver Helper fix, modifying the registry to NOT clear the pagefile on shutdown, and going into msconfig to disable the nxie selection in the startup tab.
None of this has solved my issue. My computer takes about 4-5 minutes to shut down or reboot. I have scanned for viruses, spyware, ect, with no luck and the only things that I have running in my taskbar are the volume icon, Norton Antivirus, and Sygate Personal Firewall.

I have checked the event log for any errors but I am unable to find any signifcant, regular activity.

Any suggestions?

http://www.topshareware.com/XP-Smoker-download-4662.htm

I run it on mine. Much faster boot-up and shut-down!!! Plus more features.

Be sure to disable un-needed services. You can free up about 40mb of ram this way.

Use this: http://home.earthlink.net/~leon36/data/services.txt

And this: http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

as a guide for disabling services.

Enjoy!

Try some reading at, www.theeldergeek.com . There are several issues covered under his XP shutdown issues section. Got this link from the search function here on the forums awhile back. I still haven't resolved this same issue on my comp, and it is very annoying. Rots O Ruck !

Have you been to Windowsupdate ? Hotfix Q329170 is known to cause problems, including an additional 30 seconds delay when shutting down.
