Looks OK, but why not do a fresh install of XP onto the new HDD? Why ghost the 98 OS onto the new drive? Just backup your files and then copy them onto the new drive when it's all been installed. You will be able to access all the 98 data files from XP anyway, though. And have a nice, clean, fresh XP install.
And no, you don't need to load XP on a FAT32 partition unless the old 98 install needs to access files on the XP partition. If you only want it for webcam stuff, then just save all the webcam files onto the 98 partition and access them from the XP partition. That make sense?
Cheers

| Yeah, what Mick said. NTFS is better for XP unless you want to be able to access files from your XP drive while you're booted to 98 then you would need to set XP us as Fat32.

ok, so you can access one hard drive from another hard drive?? lol i'm so new at this..sorry. i suppose i need to research this dual HD thingy idea...never thought i'd ever do this. hehe i kinda would rather not have anything 98 on my new hard drive which is why i thought using the second hard drive for the 98 only would work best. BUT ne way, if i do a clean install of XP onto my newly formatted HD how would i go about installing all my other non-98OS files to the XP HD?? i do that with Ghost?? argh, i'm so confused. i have no idea how to do that or how it all works. i can build the friggin computer, but when it comes to all the other crap...i'm mostly clueless. lol i have only my OS on one partition if that helps. i have partitions for apps., internet stuff, data (which is empty lol), and another small one that's empty right now. don't ask me why i have so many partitions...LOL
oh also, if i only ghost the non-98OS partitions to the new HD, would that not mess up some of the program files and stuff?? (are y'all laughing at me yet?? lol)
and i need to use NTFS, ok...got that.

| Not quite sure I got this. Any applications will need to be reloaded after you install XP, as they won't work otherwise. And they will need to be compatible with XP as well.
So, what do you really NEED to load onto the XP partition form the 98 partition??

so i'm gonna have to re-install every freakin thing over again??? i thought that was the whole point of Ghost, to NOT have to do that. see, that's why i was thinking to Ghost my entire hard drive onto the new hard drive and then install XP onto the new drive like i'm upgrading so everything would work right and i wouldn't have to start all over with a new hard drive. i want EVERYTHING on my XP hard drive cuz that's the one i'm gonna be using. the 98 hard drive will ONLY be used for webcam stuff as that drive is gonna die on me soon anyway prolly.

Yes, you could upgrade, but it's messy as far as potential problems that might get held over from the previous 98 install. I see now why you were considering ghosting onto the new drive.
If you want the easist way to do this, then ghosting the old 98 partition and upgrading is probably the way to go. Just bear in mind that some 98 apps may not work with XP. You can do a check first to see what problems might arise if you are unsure - just run the XP CD and select the tool for checking your system for XP.

well, gee....i'm outta school for the summer with no job so i guess i can just re-install everything cuz i SHO don't want anymore problems than necessary. 98 has been giving me several error messages lately and it's stinkin aggravating. ok, so do a clean install of XP and all my crud onto the new drive and set it as primary. the old drive i won't mess with at all, just set it up as secondary. and then i can access the secondary drive while i'm using the primary XP drive?? crappit i gotta go read about this stuff....thanks for ALL y'alls help with this...i really appreciate it...i've been worrying about what to do for some time now.
thanks heavens for this forum! heheehe |

Good choice, IMO. A nice, fresh system install is the way to go.
And, as an aside, I wonder if you can't get your webcam working with another prog if the one it comes with doesn't get support with XP? Will mean you don't have to worry about 98 at all, then.
In fact, maybe XP will support your webcam by itself?
Anyhow, sounds like you are set up with something to do for the summer, now.
Cheers
