Mandrake 9.1 X problems

I just upgraded from Mandrake 9.0 to 9.1. I'm not at home right now so I'm spacing on the model numbers of all my hardware, but maybe someone can help me despite that. Installation appeared to go fine, but when it tries to go into X it gets caught in a loop where it almost shows the login screen, then goes back to the part where the cursor is an hourglass, etc. Rebooting doesn't help. Going to terminal mode and typing startx doesn't help. Everything was fine earlier today when I had 9.0. I guess there's a problem with my XConfig file or something? How should I proceed? Should I assume my copy of 9.1 is mostly okay, or should I try to burn it again? Thanks!

Try to boot up to just a command line and try "startx" ...see what it does

What is the exact error you're given?
Do you have a Nvidia card?
You'll have to recompile the nvidia drivers if so.. then you should be good to go
You have to compile the drivers for the new kernel..

hope it helps

Reconfigure X using the command line XFConfig tool (which ever version your distro includes). I suspect the upgrade put in new video drivers, but left the older config file intact.

I have to agree with Dunbar here. There's where I'd start looking first. I'm kinda hoping that the XF86Config fork will produce a "Safe Mode" for X when all the dust settles. Not being able to get X working is all too common of a problem for new Linux users..

The Mandrake x config tool is XFdrake.

Boot your machine and when you get the lilo splash, hit the Esc key. Then type linux 3 at the prompt and hit Enter. Login as root and run XFdrake and you can re-do your XF86Config.

Mandrake 9.1 logs to vtty 12.

Can you Ctrl-Alt-F12 and see if it shows any relevant error messages?
