YES! XP is written on the NT kernel, also used for Win 2K. It is much more stable than the 98. It facilitates mor networking wih ease along with a ton of other features (some eye candy) If you need a more specific answer, please post it.

Yes, the kernel in windows nt was advanced for it's time.
Windows 2000 was based on windows nt, which brought a whole new stability to windows.
Which is one of the reasons MS stopped support for windows 98, which means there aren't any newer drivers for windows 98, nvidia and ati have stopped this.
Which means you would need something newer than a 9x os.

Another difference between Win9x and WinNT (Xp) would be the fact that NT kernel based operating systems run on a less privilaged ring vs. Win9x making NT kernel more stable. If installed on NTFS partition, you also have more features and also uses less diskspace for the same size data vs. FAT(32).

It can't join a domain, but i do think it's possible. Turn off the windows xp firewall, setup an ftp, make sure if you have any other firewall or firebox that you configure them correctly to allow server permissions and have an open port for the ftp.
