Before you plug the router into the cable modem, unplug the power from the cable modem.. then bring up the cable modem, then plug in the router (assuming its now connected to the cable modem via ethernet)

Sure, if you want the 'server' machine to be on whenever you want to use the 'client' machine. What if the 'server' machine needs to reboot in the middle of your deathmatch?

Also, if you feel like putting up with buggy ICS. I've seen ICS screw up more times than I can count.

For the small price of a Linksys or D-Link router, you get enough features and stability to make it worthwhile.

That's why you use a dedicated server...when you have old systems laying around the house...BUYING a router is completely illogical and a waste of money

Um, maybe I'm dumb, but what IP is the old school computer set to use in TCP/IP?

I would assume the school had it set up on a network, and maybe they set it manually or by DHCP?

And if you want it to see the other PC, they'll need to be on the same workgroup.

Do an ipconfig /all in a command prompt on BOTh PC's, and post what they say, if you are still having problems. My bet is that you just need to reconfigure the networking properties.

Cheers
Mick

And in this case, he has no dedicated server...

So which one is completely illogical now? Get a run-of-the-mill PC to work as a router/firewall which consumes god knows how much more electricity than a simple, small router device? =]

I won't even bring up admining the software filewall, applying updates, hardware failure, and all that other jazz.. =]

Will you bring up that it would cost less to power that pc than BUY and power a router?

Will you bring up that it's THE SAME to admin Smoothwall and a router's config...will you add that a Linksys router has proven 100x more difficult to setup than Smoothwall has been for me?

Of course you won't...

Uh, don't use that one. Use IPCop, which is better supported GPL-wise. SW is too commercial for my liking now.

Um, smoothwall and ipcop are not servers - they are routers/firewalls. They don't serve anything.

So, Telexen, you are using a router.

Cheers

Telexen: Didn't you just say a router was unnecessary?

Both alternatives have pro's and con's. I use an old IBM PC and Freesco for my router. Simply because I can't afford a Router/Switch box. I had major headaches trying to get the router to work right. I tried smoothwall but I couldn't get that to work eighter, and I thought it was really confusing. Took a long time to get the router to work. And it's noisy. I wouldn't mind a LinkSys or D-Link router, but for now I'm good with my PC router.

"...Linksys router has proven 100x more difficult to setup than Smoothwall has been for me?"

Yes, but we're talking about the average user here. For all we know you could be a networking/linux professional...

Of course you won't...

Well, someone is getting a little cranky.. heh

Let's assume an average PC+Monitor costs 4 cents an hour to run. Sans the monior, we'll take it down to 2 cents an hour to run.. That's about 175$ a year.. You could of bought three Linksys units with that money. Let's then assume a linksys costs 1 cent an hour to run, which is probably high (But it'll help average out our PC costs per hour); That's about 88$ a year to run.. Still obviously cheaper in one year alone.

It's not the same to admin a router device as it is to admin a software router. That's just silly. Unless that wasn't your point, which I guess it wasn't.

As for the complications with setup on a linksys unit. Well, I'm afaid it's really not as hard as you make it sound. Matter of fact, if your ISP uses DHCP, I don't even think you have anything to change; You set your machines to DHCP, and tada... Maybe you'll go in and set some the host/domain. Maybe a little more. And maybe not.

Well anyway... This conversation ends here... You have your opinion, I have mine. And you are getting a little too cranky to have an intelligent conversation with.
