Asus P4P800 Onboard Sound Problems

Hi, I just bought an Asus P4P800 and I having problems setting up the onboard sound. (Let me first say that I have one error with the computer, with the ram, I have to run it underclocked to make it work, but that will be resolved when I get different RAM later in the week).

At any rate, The onboard sound card seems to not be working. Under BIOS, it has an option of [auto/disabled] so I have it set to auto. The problem with the sound is it doesnt work. I have installed the updated drivers but still nothing works. What is really wierd however is that the microphone DOES work on it. Here is some basic information ...

Motherboard - Asus P4P800 with BIOS at 1007
OS - Win XP (have also tried in 2000)
I have nothing attached to the computer (as far as hubs, or USB connections, mouse and keyboard are in PS/2 slots

I dont know what else to do, I have tried it on 2 different monitors, with updated drivers, like I said, and still nothing. On the Asus website, this is what they have listed under audio:
ADI AD1985 SoundMAX 6-channel CODEC
S/PDIF out interface

I dont have the s/pdif hooked up, but I dont think that should matter. can anybody help me?

try going back to a later bios, i have the p4c800 with the 1006 bios and my onboard sound works just fine.

I have the P4P800 Deluxe... and i am having audio problems. However, I think I know the root of my problem, but haven't had a chance to research it. There is a header near PCI slots on my board for front case-mounted audio input and output. There are two jumpers on the header, that should not be removed unless you are planning on hooking up the front audio jacks. I removed mine, and then decided not to hook up the front audio, but didn't replace the jumpers. Might have you done the same thing?

I just bought the P4P800 Deluxe and am having the same problem with no sound. Tryed updating the drivers from the Asus site (those that would unpack properly). Right now I'm stumped. Thinking about bypassing the problem by just installing a soundcard but it irritates me so much, I have to fix it. Let me know if you find a resolution.

amcintosh nailed it. I also had the jumpers taken out and the case front audio hooked in. I replaced the jumpers and the sound started working. I made the mistake thinking that you could have rear sound and also utilize the front hookups for mic, data L, data R.
