Kids Ghosting before or after upgrade to XP? also Heat issue question

mmkay...here's my situation. I have win98se currently...my hard drive is prolly going to fail soon and i am going out to buy a new drive today. i've never used ghost before. i wanted to upgrade to XP. BUT should i upgrade to XP before i ghost my HD or after?? i just don't wanna screw anything up. i was also considering creating ghost images of my current drive and saving them to an empty partition then burning that to cd-r's first. THEN after that i would ghost the HD itself to the new HD. i want the backup cds just in case even tho i'm getting a new HD. how does this sound?? upgrade first or after i've ghosted all i'm gonna ghost? hehe

the heat issue...i have an AMD 1.33 t-bird...i live in alabama....i have one fan in teh front drawing air in, i have 2 on the back pulling it out....i have a 6cu thermaltake....my temps run something like this: system: 35 cpu: 56+ is this too hot? do i need to upgrade my HSF?

thanks for helping.

I would do a CLEAN install of Windows XP with your Upgrade CD (it will ask you for an older version of Windows to verify it is an upgrade and I believe Win98SE works with XP Home)...THEN Ghost your drive.

That way you have an image of a nice clean installation you can load quickly whenever you need to.

ok, well, it's not an upgrade cd, it's the FULL version of XP Pro that i've had for some time just afraid to use it cuz i've heard some bad stuff about xp. does that change anything?

and are you saying to upgrade my 98 to xp on my old drive first, THEN ghost?? am i reading you right? is a CLEAN install where it wipes out 98 completely?? i'm new at this, sorry.

It is best to wipe out Windows 98 COMPLETELY

Just put your XP CD in your CDROM, reboot your system and boot to the CD (you may have to chane BIOS setting to do that)...then just follow onscreen instructions from there.

If it is the full version it will be no hassle at all to install XP
