Railgun help.

Im building a rail gun with the help of Caleb Chung (inventor of the furby) and I was woundering what the best sorce of caps is. I was talking to nunyadam last night and he said microwaves. I could pick up a few at the local second hand store but what else? I know monitors have some but Im looking for even larger.

Thanks,
PyroSama

Wow, I can't think of any commercial appliances off hand that have bigger caps than monitors and TVs.

If you just need caps, why don't you order them from Radio Shack or something?

Rail guns are uber-cool.

you need big caps for a rail gun - dont know how big ones in moniter are but i think you will want more than the performance they will give you

You will need either big caps or one heck of an array. I'm thinking ones out of a Microwave Oven may be what to look for. Commercial Microwave ovens maybe?

I’m thinking 6 or so 100mF 4kV caps should to the trick. I tore an old 256color 14in monitor apart and the largest I found was a 1200mF 120v cap. I don’t know if its enough volts to do this.

(I used the mF because IE doesnt suport the correct symbol)

Here's some Cornell Dubilier mica caps I found rated at 4000 volts+. Their all rated in pF, but they have some high-rated caps (like 100,000 pf). Hope that gets you on the right track:

some people at mit (i think) built a railgun with 6 100uF 4kv caps - think they had a web site so you could look around and see how that turned out
