[XP] Changing Sound Card.

Gday Folks.

Recently slipped a new mobo in under my XP install.

I need to get the sound working [both old and new were onboard]
But can't [dont know how] get it to go.

I have the mobo driver CD.
I know the sound chip: Creative CT5880.

Yes, I know a bit about 2K/XP.
[Maybe not enuff]
So I've trawled around in the settings.
But I'm bluffed.

Advice please. How does one, change a sound card in XP?

Btw: I can't get the latest StrongBad email.
Until I get the sound working.

Help!!! Rusty.

Go to device manager, and remove all the things that aren't in the computer any more. You should really have done this beforehand.
When you find themin dev manager, remove them, make sure all software pertaining to them is uninstalled and reboot. It should pick up new drivers on startup. It might not though.
Is sound etc enabled in the BIOS?

Nukes.

'Device Mangler' in 2K/XP is quite a bit different to 9X.
In 9X you can kill devices. Reboot and they are gone.

XP is NT. You find only the driver set. Not the hardware, per se.

NT doesnt care much about hardware.
So it doesnt jump up with "Found hardware" boxes.

Had it done so. My task would have been easier.

Advice Please !!!. R.

Actually XP should detect the hardware and either pop up a box or automatically install drivers for it.

My suggestions would to actually do full format and reinstall... I personally reckon too much changes when ya do a full mobo swap so i like to format to make sure all the old stuff is gone properly...

But yeh, check that there isn't a jumper on the mobo to enable the onboard sound, or maybe a bios setting (or both like my old mobo had).

Gday JayMan.

Long time, no hear bloke.

Reinstall? Not keen.

Gotta be a work around this.
[I'll check the board setup again, good point]

But in this case.
The mobo was the only thing changed.

The full complement of cards and drives remain the same.
The on board sound is the only bug.
[Maybe I should whack in a pci sound card and try it]

Pressed for time Atm.
Drilling in the boonies, is not conducive, to a geeks habit/hobby.

[The FaD adminatrix has been struggling while wrangling the herd lately]

Cheers Rusty.

Edit = Update the post.

Hmm... Maybe this might work... I'm not sure tho... There is like a registry key that ya can delete which will force XP to do a full recheck & install of all hardware... I'm not sure what the key is tho... Or if that will even fix it...

Whacking a PCI soundcard in will probably work no worries, but it would still be nice to get this worked out...

I assume you've already tried to install the drivers for the onboard sound?

Right click on my computer, go to manage, then device manager, are there any warnings/conflicts showing in there? Try this in safe mode too...

I alaways do back-ups of data before a mainboard upgrade. There is just too much new hardware and the only microsoft OS that I've seen handle it ok is XP but, still had some problems. You could right click "My Computer">select "Manage". This opens your Computer management window. Click the "View" tab and select "view resources by connection". In here, you may drope down the Interrupt request (IRQ) button to give a full listing of IRQ's WindowsXP has already grabbed. Check to make sure that IRQ 5 is not being used by anything other than your onboard sound. IRQ #5 is what many Onboard sound devices grab by default. If the OS still has it locked to your old sound then your new sound wont be able install properly. You will need to release IRQ#5 to fix it. You can check your mainboard BIOS and see what IRQ your onboard sound is trying to grab from Windows. Let us know if this helps.

I'm with JayMan on the new image for optimum system stability which I hope doesnt trouble you in the future. Next time your machine reboots for what seems to be no reason......you just gotta wonder....heh
